NeoPrep™

Unifying the design.

Illumina bought a company that specialized in DNA tagging to uniquely identify samples being sequenced simultaneously. The initial instrument did not have consistent visual branding of Illumina.

My responsibility was to unify Illumina’s look and feel. I oversaw the entire design process and managed vendors and consultants under an aggressive deadline.

The challenge

2 months

When Illumina acquired a company that specialized in DNA preparation, the plan was to launch a product in 8 months. The design window was small, 2 months.

Inconsistent design

Although marketing approved the design, I pushed back and insisted that the design needed to be consistent with Illumina’s standard.

Interaction issues

During user testing, immediate concerns arose in regards to the interaction of the cartridge.

Process

Re-configuring components

Moving the screen backwards, “kills many birds with one stone”. First, user can place cartridge near screen (for instructions). Second, allowed for left hand users to engage w cartridge. Third, allowed for consistent ID language.

Sketches

Because NeoPrep™ was an addendum to sequencing process, the design should compliment current Illumina sequencers.
